×îÐÂÐÓ°ÉÔ­´´ City SC did it again on Saturday night, keeping its record undefeated through five games, though at the same time, running another streak to three games in a row without a win.

City SC played to its third consecutive tie, using a penalty kick by Klauss, for his first goal of the season, in the 69th minute to rally, once again to get one point. The final score was 2-2 in a cold night before another sellout crowd at CityPark.

That goal represented salvation for City SC, which fell behind 2-1 in the first half when, for the second time in three weeks, it gave up a goal immediately after scoring a goal.

The game-tying goal came on a familiar sight for City SC, a scoring chance that appeared to never fully take shape. A City SC possession ended with the ball in the D.C. goalkeeper’s arms, but, well after the fact, referee Amin Hadzic was summoned to the VAR monitor to look at the play. Celio Pompeu had been knocked down on the edge of the box by D.C.’s Conner Antley, gotten up and taken a shot or attempted a cross that was grabbed by goalkeeper Alex Bono. But the replay showed that Antley had fouled Pompeu and that Pompeu was in the box at the time, so it was a penalty kick.

Eduard Lowen, who normally takes City SC’s PKs, is out with a hamstring injury, so the job fell to Klauss, who rolled the ball into the lower right corner after a half-dozen stuttersteps while Bono dived in the wrong direction.

When Josh Yaro headed in a corner kick from Indiana Vassilev in the 19th minute — the first goal in his MLS career — it seemed a good sign for City SC, which had scored just two goals in the first half over its seven games so far in two competitions. And it usually translates into something positive: City SC is 15-1-3 over the last season-plus when scoring first.

But the celebration didn’t last long. A minute later, Jared Stroud crossed a ball into the box that Christian Benteke directed on goal, only to have Roman Burki block it. But the rebound came down in the box where Ted Ku-DiPietro knocked it in from about a foot out to tie the game. On the sidelines, City SC coach Bradley Carnell shook his head.

In the 38th minute, it got worse. Nikolas Dyhr and Joakim Nilsson both went for a ball near the left sideline, and not only did they not get it, they bumped into each other, springing Stroud for another run. Stroud crossed the ball into the box and this time, Benteke’s redirection went into the net to put D.C. United up 2-1.

City SC was facing a depleted D.C. United squad that had just six players on the bench because of international callups, a red-card suspension and injuries, and two of those six players were goalkeepers. Stroud, a midfielder, started at right back because the options at that position weren’t available.

Dyhr made his first start for City SC, taking over from Anthony Markanich, and Samuel Adeniran and Klauss started together for the first time this season in an MLS game. (They started together in the Champions Cup games.)
