A sewer pipe that connects the Bridgeton Landfill to Metropolitan 最新杏吧原创 Sewer District treatment facilities overflowed Tuesday afternoon, releasing thousands of gallons of sewage.
MSD spokesman Lance LeComb said the sewer district estimated about 10,000 to 11,000 gallons of liquid waste was released, some of which was generated by the Bridgeton Landfill.
LeComb said the waste from Bridgeton Landfill had already been processed by landfill owner Republic Service鈥檚 onsite treatment plant, built last year. An underground fire in the Bridgeton Landfill has generated larger volumes of leachate, and the contaminated liquid contains high levels of benzene that Republic was forced to treat before sending to MSD.
A Republic spokesman said there has been no problem with the pretreatment facility鈥檚 operations.
鈥淔rom a regulatory standpoint, it鈥檚 regular sewage and we treat it as such,鈥 LeComb said of the waste released Tuesday.

The sewage is contained and did not enter any waterways, MSD said.
It鈥檚 the second infrastructure issue at the high-profile landfill in recent days, following a weekend brush fire sparked by a faulty electric pole switch. The burning Bridgeton Landfill is next to radioactively contaminated West Lake Landfill, a federal superfund site that officials have not decided how to clean up.
LeComb said a contractor is already on site and is expected to work through the night.
鈥淕iven the community sensitivities we wanted to be as quick and judicious as possible.鈥
