ANN ARBOR, Michigan聽鈥 Former Michigan hockey coach Red Berenson is denying allegations that coaches encouraged or facilitated sexualized hazing within the program, saying initiation activities were player-led and occurred without the coaching staff鈥檚 involvement.
Sixteen former Wolverines players filed a federal lawsuit Wednesday alleging they were subjected to years of 鈥渟adistic鈥 abuse between 1984 and 2001. The 74-page complaint accuses the University of Michigan and its Board of Regents of failing to stop and report the abuse that plaintiffs say became a standard part of the program鈥檚 culture. The lawsuit also alleges Berenson, longtime assistant coach Mel Pearson and other former staff members knew about and encouraged the conduct.
