ST. LOUIS 鈥 The former McCluer North High football coach who officials say hijacked a small plane in Belize, stabbing two passengers and a pilot, had also worked as a teacher at Hazelwood Central High School and owned a house in Overland.
Akinyela Taylor, who was shot and killed by one of the men he stabbed, worked at Hazelwood Central for two school years.
Someone who answered the video doorbell at the small house in southeast Overland on Friday said the family was not publicly discussing Taylor or the hijacking. Taylor鈥檚 nephew told local TV outlet KSDK on Thursday .
Taylor was a former assistant football coach at McCluer North High School in 最新杏吧原创 County about seven years ago. He also taught world history and government at Hazelwood Central then.

Taylor is accused of hijacking a Tropic Air plane that was carrying 14 passengers and two crew members Thursday morning. It was flying from Corozal, a small town near Belize鈥檚 border with Mexico, heading to the popular tourist destination of San Pedro.
The plane circled in random directions for nearly two hours as the drama unfolded in the skies. The plane was tailed by a police helicopter before touching down at an airport in the coastal town of Ladyville.
Belize authorities declared a full emergency immediately after the incident started, around 8:30 a.m. local time, according to a statement by the Belize Airport Concession Company.
鈥淚n the face of incomprehensible pressure, our pilot acted with extraordinary courage and calm, guiding the aircraft to a safe landing. His actions were nothing short of heroic,鈥 said Maximillian Greif, the CEO of the airline company.
The two wounded passengers and pilot were being treated at a hospital for their injuries, officials said.
U.S. State Department spokesperson Tammy Bruce said at a news briefing in Washington that officials were still gathering information about what occurred.
鈥淗orrifying,鈥 she said. 鈥淲e are grateful, I think all of us are, that that did not turn into a mass casualty event with I believe over a dozen people on the plane. Clearly we know a few details. We don鈥檛 know much more.鈥
Chester Williams, Belize police commissioner, identified the hijacker as Taylor and said he was a U.S. military veteran. U.S. officials did not confirm that.
Onye Holloman, a Ferguson-Florissant District spokeswoman, said Taylor had been an assistant coach at McCluer North from June 27, 2018, to Feb. 6, 2019, and isn鈥檛 affiliated now with the district.
Hazelwood Central High School staffing reports list Taylor as a government and world history teacher for the 2017-18 and 2018-19 school years.
A Hazelwood School District spokesperson did not return calls seeking comment.
Taylor appears to have no criminal history listed in Missouri鈥檚 online court record database.
On Thursday, one of the stabbed passengers managed to shoot at Taylor, who was killed, Williams said, adding that the passenger was licensed to carry a firearm and later turned his weapon over to police. The passenger was stabbed in his back and suffered a puncture to his lungs, Williams said. He remains in critical condition.
鈥淲e are praying for him,鈥 Williams told reporters. 鈥淗e鈥檚 our hero.鈥
An official at Tropic Air, who spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to talk to journalists, identified the injured crew member as Howell Grange. He said the two injured passengers, one of whom shot the hijacker, were Fitzgerald Brown and Jair Casta帽eda. Their nationalities were not immediately known.
Williams said that Taylor was demanding to be flown out of the country, possibly to Mexico, and at one point wanted the plane to land to add more fuel.
U.S. Embassy spokesperson Luke Martin in Belize said Taylor also insisted that he be taken to the U.S.
鈥淲e don鈥檛 know why he wanted to go back to the United States,鈥 Martin said.
U.S. officials said they did not know the motive for Taylor鈥檚 hijacking but were working with Belize authorities to determine what happened.
