ST. LOUIS 鈥 The man charged with killing a woman in a 最新杏吧原创 alley after abducting her from her Clayton apartment was dating the woman鈥檚 sister and targeted her for a $40,000 settlement in her bank account, court documents say.
Anjuan Mosby, 43, abducted Michelle Hampton on Wednesday from her apartment on Whitburn Drive, took her to various banks to withdraw cash, then shot her and left her in a north city alley, authorities said.
Just hours earlier, he had left the home of her sister, Samantha Hampton, an FBI agent wrote in an affidavit filed in federal court.
FBI agents say Samantha had been in a relationship with Mosby and told him about a $40,000 settlement Michelle was holding for their brother. But the day of the kidnapping, Samantha hadn鈥檛 heard from Mosby and couldn鈥檛 reach him. It was unusual.

Mosby was charged over the weekend with federal kidnapping resulting in death and 18 felonies in state court after authorities.
On Monday, he appeared in court with shackled hands and pleaded not guilty. He looked toward Hampton鈥檚 family and shook his head.
Mosby has a long criminal record that began in 1999 when he was charged with several counts of stealing. He later admitted to the charges and was sentenced to probation.
Over the next several years, he racked up additional stealing and tampering cases and was eventually sentenced to state prison.
Then, in 2007, he was charged in federal court with being a felon possession of a firearm and sentenced to prison. Shortly after he got out, his probation was revoked, court records say.
In 2015, he was again charged federally for having a gun. Court records from that case say Mosby had tried to get a job after he was released from prison on his previous case but found it difficult.
He worked briefly in construction and with temporary jobs at factories, but it wasn鈥檛 enough money to support his partner and two children, court records say.

He told his lawyer then that 鈥渂eing in the streets鈥 led to the gun charge.
Mosby was released from federal prison in 2022, court records show.
On Wednesday, he and an unidentified person abducted Michelle, authorities said. Samantha arrived at her sister鈥檚 apartment and saw Michelle in the driver鈥檚 seat of her SUV with a masked man in the passenger seat, Samantha told the Post-Dispatch.
Samantha followed them as they left. A yellow Dodge Ram trailed close behind, she said, with multiple masked men inside. At some point, the passenger in the SUV fired at her, and she stopped following.
Authorities said Mosby later took Michelle into the yellow truck. The two, and perhaps others, then drove from bank to bank trying to withdraw thousands in cash 鈥 $2,000 from a PNC drive-up window on Page Boulevard and $1,000 at the Bank of America on Lindell Boulevard, court documents say.
But at a PNC on Chippewa Street, the teller told her to come inside to withdraw money, and the yellow truck drove off.
At 11 a.m. Wednesday, Michelle was found shot to death in an alley in the 4700 block of Greer Avenue. Police said she was shot multiple times.
They found a bank receipt near her body.
Federal court records say Mosby was with Michelle in the yellow Ram truck during each of the bank visits. Mosby gave Michelle a chance to run away when they got to the alley on Greer, but when she didn鈥檛, he shot her, records say.
Police got a warrant for Mosby鈥檚 cellphone data and determined he had left Samantha鈥檚 home around 2:45 a.m. His phone eventually landed near the 4800 block of Margaretta Avenue, court documents say.
It was near that location where police eventually found the yellow Ram in a garage and a sweatshirt with Mosby鈥檚 DNA on it in a dumpster nearby. Mosby鈥檚 co-conspirators were supposed to burn the truck, the gun used in the murder and the sweatshirt he was wearing after the kidnapping, federal authorities wrote in court documents.
Friday, police tracked Mosby鈥檚 phone to the 4100 block of Kossuth Avenue where they watched as he got out of the house and into a car. Police tried to stop him, but he fled. Police laid down spike strips, stopping the car, court records say.
They found a gun and drugs inside the car, and Mosby suggested he had kidnapped Michelle to get her to withdraw money, but the initial plan was to let her go, documents say.
Police on Monday refused to say whether they were seeking another person in Michelle鈥檚 death, but they said the investigation was still 鈥渧ery active.鈥
The next hearing in Mosby鈥檚 state case is set for Dec. 4. He is being held without bond.
