When it comes to rock records fueled by emotional lyricism, Shinedown holds the victory flag high. The Florida band, led by singer-songwriter Brent Smith, formed in 2001. Four months after releasing the album 鈥淓i8ht,鈥 Shinedown is bringing its 鈥淒ance Kid Dance Act II鈥 world tour to the Factory on Sept. 7. The band has a slew of songs from the new album on the setlist, like 鈥淥utlaw鈥 and 鈥淒ance Kid Dance.鈥 But it鈥檚 also taking fans back in time with cuts like 鈥淪imple Man鈥 and 鈥淪econd Chance.鈥

Shinedown鈥檚 鈥淭hree Six Five鈥 is one of those songs that encompasses the pains and joys of life鈥檚 changing tide. It falls into a collection of songs like 鈥100 Years鈥 by Five for Fighting or 鈥淪easons of Love鈥 from the musical 鈥淩ent鈥 that embody the changes that happen in a year.
The song is incredibly relatable, a hallmark of Shinedown鈥檚 career. 鈥淭hree Six Five鈥 shoves the reality of change in everyone鈥檚 faces. It questions grief, loneliness and longing while somehow riding a whimsical rhythm that feels like a fresh beginning.

I didn鈥檛 realize that 鈥45鈥 was by Shinedown until I was an adult. Released on the band鈥檚 debut 2003 album, 鈥淟eave a Whisper,鈥 鈥45鈥 came out the summer before I started seventh grade. During those years, rock music started having a major impact on me and my writing.
Looking back, I was a dark and misunderstood teenager. My parents were finally getting a divorce after a long separation. My mother was depressed. And I was a difficult adolescent, dissociating through reading Anne Rice vampire lore, writing poetry and listening to Shinedown鈥檚 鈥45鈥 on 105.7 the Point.
The band does an excellent job of using the barrel of a .45 automatic Colt pistol as a metaphor for leaving one life behind and starting another. In a lot of ways, that's exactly what it鈥檚 like navigating through the murky waters of adolescence. You鈥檙e not old enough to be respected like an adult, but too old to be coddled. A time when you鈥檙e straddling adulthood and childhood, occupying neither.
Beyond its lyricism, 鈥45鈥 has all of the elements of a dark, heavy rock song. There is a slow tempo and there are memorable guitar chords at the start. As the bridge begins, the tempo quickens before Smith comes in crooning the lyrics as Berry Kerch bangs the drums. As a teenager, 鈥45鈥 became my angst-filled mantra on the rougher days of growing up.
鈥楰illing Fields鈥
The fast-tempo rock song 鈥淜illing Fields鈥 was released on Shinedown鈥檚 eighth album in May 2026. But I first heard it on a three-track EP in the summer of 2025, and it was love at first listen.
Smith鈥檚 voice at the beginning of the song is a deep lull and leads into a track full of metaphors for facing yourself and honoring your personal truths. With 鈥淜illing Fields鈥 released a year before the 鈥淓i8ht鈥 album, the song made me excited to see what Shinedown had in store for fans on the LP.
The song also explores new-age, trending topics like twin flames and toxic connections, but it also looks at hardship. Smith discusses the rumors of the 鈥渆nd of days鈥 and the fentanyl crisis, comparing it to drinking lemonade to emphasize how common overdoses are in the United States. Lyrics like 鈥渢oxic twins on a carousel鈥 highlight how everyone is a reflection of others they encounter on life鈥檚 loop of ups and downs. Others like 鈥淚鈥檇 love to turn the page, but pain is all the rage鈥 touch on the monetization of pain and suffering.
Shinedown鈥檚 鈥淜illing Fields鈥 is an anthem for navigating this crazy world. At times, life can feel like an unreal killing field. The song showcases the power of introspection, and it reveals and transforms us and those around us.
