Health department Director Dr. Kanika Cunningham said the county will seek feedback on its pilot program to 鈥渕ake it the best volunteer program ever.鈥
The announcement comes as the county takes back operations of the shelter from a contractor on Friday.
鈥淲e are deeply grateful for those members of our community who step up and help us provide humane care, adoptions and promotion of responsible pet ownership,鈥 Cunningham said in a statement.

Volunteers for the Animal Protective Association, which has been running the shelter for two years, said last week they were worried about a lack of an application. The county originally planned to pause volunteering indefinitely after the APA leaves, leaving volunteers concerned about who would walk dogs, clean and do laundry.
A press release from County Executive Sam Page鈥檚 office didn鈥檛 say when the county鈥檚 volunteer program would be up and running.
Last week, health department spokeswoman Sara Dayley said the county will have 鈥減lenty of employees to handle the work鈥 until the volunteer program starts.

Despite being closed someone has to take care of the dogs and cats at the Humane Society of Missouri. Several staff members and volunteers braved the snow on Thursday, Feb. 3, 2022 to take care of the animals in the shelter's care. Adoption center director Anne Vincent urges community members to call their animal abuse hotline if they are concerned about an animal's welfare during extreme winter weather.
