JEFFERSON CITY 鈥 A Republican candidate for state Senate in west 最新杏吧原创 County is demanding that TV stations stop running an ad that claims he wrote the state鈥檚 current abortion ban.
The campaign of David Gregory, a former state representative running for the 15th Senate District, says an ad by Democratic opponent Joe Pereles falsely claims Gregory wrote the legislation.
The law bans all abortions in Missouri except in medical emergencies. Amendment 3 on the Nov. 5 ballot would overturn the ban and protect abortion rights in the state constitution.
Gregory co-sponsored and voted for the bill in 2019 when he was a state legislator from Sunset Hills.
But in response to Pereles鈥 ad, his campaign released a statement from state Sen. Nick Schroer, the sponsor of the bill, who said Gregory didn鈥檛 write it.

鈥淛oe Pereles鈥 new political ad should be called 鈥楪utless,鈥 because it is filled with cowardly lies, including one that hits close to home,鈥 Schroer said. 鈥淎s the legislator who actually wrote Missouri鈥檚 abortion ban, imagine my surprise when I saw Joe Pereles鈥 ad falsely claiming that David Gregory wrote it.鈥
The move is the latest sign that abortion has become a dominating issue in the state Senate race 鈥 one in which Gregory may believe he is out-of-step with voters.
A political action committee supporting Pereles recently published excerpts of a memo it said was accidently posted to Gregory鈥檚 website.
The memo had a section called 鈥淪ide Step Abortion Issue鈥 that asks 鈥淒o they (voters) mind if the state senator鈥檚 position is slightly different?鈥
Megan Shackelford, spokesperson for Pereles, said in a statement that Gregory wanted to mislead voters.
鈥淗e recently said in a campaign memo that he wants to 鈥榮idestep鈥 the abortion issue, but the facts speak for themselves,鈥 she said. 鈥淗e sponsored the bill, said he was 鈥榗oming down off the high鈥 of the overturn of Roe v. Wade and now he wants to mislead voters about his position on access to reproductive health care.鈥
