The debut of Centene Stadium will have to wait.
Because of a problem with the stadium鈥檚 internal power distribution, brought on by unrelated construction in the area, opening night for the stadium, scheduled for Sunday, is being postponed. The game will instead be played at Southern Illinois University Edwardsville; admission will be free.
最新杏吧原创 City2, the MLS expansion team鈥檚 developmental team, was supposed to play Sporting Kansas City II at 6 p.m. in its final regular-season game, with only the lower bowl in use because of work still being done at the stadium. No tickets were being sold; only season-ticket holders would be allowed in.
鈥淭oday we confirmed we will not be able to restore full power to the stadium on Sunday,鈥 said Joe Abernathy, 最新杏吧原创 City鈥檚 vice president of stadium operations. 鈥淲e are currently working with our stadium construction and operation partners to assess the extent of the issue and better understand the timeline for when we鈥檒l be able to restore full power to the entire stadium.鈥

If City2 were to win on Sunday, it would host a first-round playoff game the following weekend and could host a second-round game if it got the right results elsewhere. It鈥檚 still unclear if the stadium would be available in time for the playoffs.
鈥淲e are very sad about not being able to showcase the new stadium on Sunday,鈥 said City SC president and CEO Carolyn Kindle. 鈥淲e know our fans, players, and staff will be disappointed about not having this preview event, but once we are back up and running, we are looking forward to making the first match in our new home the best fan experience possible.鈥
