COTTLEVILLE聽鈥 A fast start was the difference Monday as host Francis Howell Central beat top-seeded Fort Zumwalt West 4-2 for the Class 5 District 3 softball championship.
The district winners will advance to the quarterfinal round on Saturday.
"We're playing well and there's no reason we can't keep doing it," said junior pitcher Anna Holland.
"Those home runs set the tone for the whole game," Vikings pitcher Harper聽Lohse said.
"We want to beat these teams to prove that we're as good as we think we are,"聽Fox High senior pitcher Avery McKinnon said.
The Chargers (16-9) won for the fourth time in five games as they prepare for the postseason chase, which begins in eight days.
"We got up and then we kept adding," Fort Zumwalt West coach Ryan Oettting said.聽
Eureka (13-4) won its sixth game in a row as it tunes up for postseason play in a few weeks.
"We just put our heads down and got it done," Harper Brown said.
Westminster junior pitcher Jaymison Lenk said, "This might be the start of something good."
The Tigers (13-4) won all four games聽in the Jerry Joyce Tournament, hosted by Seckman High.
"It's so fun to watch her because there's always a good chance she's going to blast one over the wall," Howell North senior infielder Amari Jones said.聽
"We had a lot of clutch hits," Howell Central coach Aaron Pearson said.
The Longhorns beat Eureka for the first time in 17 years.
Fort Zumwalt West beat host Troy Buchanan 4-3 in 11 innings in the title game.

"We walked away with a trophy and a pair of puppies," Zumwalt West coach Ryan Oetting said. "Not a bad tournament."
