It was one of those nights for ×îÐÂÐÓ°ÉÔ´´ University, as the 3-point shots that are a big part of their offense didn’t fall and along with that, the team was down three players because of injuries.
SLU ultimately couldn’t keep up with Wichita State, getting blown out in the second half in an 88-63 loss at T-Mobile Center in Kansas City. SLU shot 20 percent on 3-point attempts and Isaiah Swope and Gibson Jimerson were, at one point, a combined 0 for 13 on 3’s before Jimerson hit a 3 with 5:49 to go in the game.
Kalu Anya and Kellen Thames finished with team-high 15 points for SLU. Anya had nine rebounds and Thames had eight.
SLU (2-2) was without three players. Robbie Avila was not ready to play after spraining his ankle on opening day. Guard Josiah Dotzler hurt his knee in practice on Wednesday and didn’t make the trip to Kansas City. Forward AJ Casey hurt his ankle in practice on Wednesday and was not available either.
That increased chances off the bench for Amari McCottry, who had six points in six minutes in the first half, and Kilian Brockhoff, who played four minutes. But mostly in the first half coach Josh Schertz stuck with his starters. Isaiah Swope and Gibson Jimerson both played 18 minutes and Kellen Thames and Kalu Anya played 16 minutes. Kobe Johnson, coming back from his shoulder injury, played 10 minutes.
SLU led 35-32 with 3:58 to go in the first half, but that was it. SLU trailed 40-37 at the half, though it could have been different if SLU had done something as simple as make free throws. SLU was 4 for 11 from the line, with Thames going 0 for 5.
Jimerson scored eight points, on 1 of 9 shooting from the field, 1 of 7 on 3’s, to increase his career total to 1,900 points. That puts him 10 points behind Erwin Claggett for second place on the all-time SLU scoring list.
