TOWN AND COUNTRY 鈥 Mark Lombardi, who has led Maryville University since 2007, announced Monday that he would retire in June when the coming academic year ends.
鈥淚t is the singular honor of my life to have led Maryville to national prominence,鈥 Lombardi said in a statement. 鈥淣ow it is time for a 21st-century leader who will build on our revolution. Maryville will lead the quest to empower tens of thousands of students to become the first college graduates in their families.鈥
Lombardi has led the private university as it grew from a mostly local school of 3,000 students to one with more than 9,000 students from around the country. He pushed Maryville to become an early leader in 鈥渄igital first鈥 higher education, and now more than half of its students take classes online.
While many smaller universities have struggled, and some have closed, due to declining student populations, Maryville managed to boost enrollment 9% last year. And it recently announced its incoming freshman class of more than 1,000 students was its largest ever.
