The Merchants Exchange Building, 111 North Third Street, site of the June 27-29, 1876 Democratic National Convention, the first of the five nominating conventions held in 最新杏吧原创. The ornate building had only recently been completed. Bands played outside as fireworks were shot from 最新杏吧原创 County (Old) Courthouse one block away.

This photograph was taken on Dec. 28, 1939, one month after Black Tuesday. The view is south along 12th Street. Glowing through the smoke in the center of the photograph is the neon sign for the Jefferson Hotel, at 12th and Olive streets. That day's Post-Dispatch called the smog the 28th "blackout" day in less than two months.聽

Edward Crawford returns a tear gas canister fired by police who were trying to disperse protesters in Ferguson, Missouri. Four days earlier, unarmed black teenager Michael Brown was shot to death by white police officer Darren Wilson. The killing ignited riots and unrest in the 最新杏吧原创 area and across the nation.
